How to maintain quality education at home?

Do I need to shell out extra money every month on a tuition teacher because my child needs extra attention or because my neighbor’s child also goes to a tuition teacher?

If we reason out, this seems to be an overwhelming situation. Indian parents today are blindly giving into the societal pressure and hiring a tuition teacher without considering the need twice. The idea over here is not to challenge parent’s understandable concern given the competition level today but to rethink about the available alternatives at home.

Every parent who sends the child to a tuition center believes and puts faith in the system as a solution to these issues-

  • The need for extra hours with the textbooks, after-school, in an enriched environment to learn and revise concepts
  • The need for individual attention for the students which is impossible in schools with large batch sizes
  • The need for extra help to complete the homework, which seems like a daunting task
  • The need for extra effort and resources beyond textbooks to prepare for examination
  • While these issues are understandable, the belief of tuition centers acting as a solution to these problems needs to be revisited.
Given the improving standards of school education in the cities, the learning curve of children is definitely not dependent on those extra hours of another ‘teacher out of school’. It rather depends on the techniques involved in learning and relearning what has already been taught in school. The idea of a tuition teacher using the clichéd techniques of rote learning needs to be replaced. The modern opportunities of introducing your child to a fun-learning environment, aided with audio- visual content should be seized. This can very well be done within the home if the parent spends a little time with the child.

The idea of a mother or a father personally taking responsibility for the child’s study time at home is nothing new in the Indian parenting system. It is only the busy lives and scarcity of time which has led to the outsourcing of this major responsibility to a tuition teacher. However, in today’s era, we are embracing technology in all spheres of life.
