True gifts of happiness

A few days ago my daughter rushed towards me with an ecstatic smile, she hid something behind her. Almost at the verge of blurting out what it was, she gave it in my hand and ran away.
As I looked down, I saw a lovely card made by my angel. She is in Kindergarten and this was her first attempt at card making. I was overwhelmed by her thoughtful surprise, the card had a dainty orange flower with a ‘THANK YOU’ scribbled below it. I sobbed as I read the words and was deeply driven by emotions. Oh yes! Mother’s mind is a maze, one thought leads to another then another and another...

I was then struck by an enigma of what actually is my responsibility as a parent. Preparing food, taking her to school, paying the bills and buying her things that she has her eyes on. Is that all? No.. there’s more to it.

There are some invaluable gifts for your child that you just cannot miss to get them.

Gift of time

Even the top-notch showrooms won’t be able to gift wrap the most precious gift for your child-your TIME! Truly, the best investment you can make for your child’s future is spending some quality time today. Working parents are dependent on nannies or house helps to take care of their children which I would say is very much justified in this fast pacing world. Still, if not the whole day then a significant portion of your day should be spent communicating with your child. I understand that you are busy with your work, but spending time with your child is equally important if you want your child to be a responsible adult.

Time is equivalent to love! So, eat with your child, pray with your child, stay with your child and love your child..?

Gift of wisdom

Wisdom cannot be completely extracted from books, schools, teachers or tuition teachers. You might think that sending your child to tuitions will give a nudge to excel and gain all the requisite knowledge but that isn’t enough. Wisdom is the mighty form of human knowledge, it contains wisdom of ethics, wisdom of culture, wisdom of feelings and wisdom of words in it. You are going to give them the wisdom to judge what is right and what is wrong.

Gift of play

We get red alert the moment we hear ‘play’ or ‘games’. Giving playtime doesn’t mean giving them the freedom to play for hours and hours. It means giving them a meaningful playtime instead of buying them pricey toys. My daughter loves playing games on phone but creates a havoc the moment it is taken away from her. I never liked seeing her cry, but I couldn’t allow her to

As she had been eagerly waiting for her birthday gift I thought of giving her something that would keep her occupied happy in a constructive manner. I bought CG Slate for my daughter, to make her playtime more fruitful and useful.

Gift of faith

Only when a child has a sense of security, he/she will be able to explore with an open mind. No memory is as powerful as that of a safe and loved childhood. Our guidance is indispensable as we connect them to the outer world. So, be with your child more often especially for their milestones. The first day of school, annual functions, examination days and the days when they do not feel great about themselves, just be there for them. They should know they have your back.

A few days back when I went to drop her to the school, the instant she got down from the car she fumbled on her first step. She then looked at me and managed to stand perfectly without a whimper. Though I didn’t help her, she waved back with a smile and said goodbye mommy.

We all get so engrossed in providing our children with the material needs of life that we somehow miss out on the basic gift of happiness. They won’t remember you for the grand barbie dolls or expensive remote control cars, but for the feeling that you cherished them, for the time you spent with them and the values you instilled in them.

A shout out to all the loving mothers and caring fathers, always remember-

It's okay to spoil your kids as long as you spoil them with love and attention
But it is not okay if you spoil them with material things and possessions.

CG Slate brings back the ‘play’ into learning with it’s interactive books, animations, videos, quizzes, engaging worksheets and innovative games.
